Ask Jeeves goes where no butler has gone before: paid search

by admin on August 1st, 2005

Well, the rumors are true and sometime later today Ask Jeeves will be launching their own paid search program. Rather than summerize whats going on I’ll do a quick run down of others.

Pandia:

The huge economic success of Google is based on the fact that the company managed to develop a new source of revenue replacing the failed banner ads of the dot com crash. Inspired by GoTo/Overture Google developed its popular AdWords ad system, which generates text ads of relevance to the content of search queries. At the moment there are two major players in this field, the above mentioned Google and Overture (now under the Yahoo! brand).
However, Microsoft is preparing its own system, and now Online Media Daily reports that Ask Jeeves is developing its own sponsored listings.

Search Engine Watch:

After weeks of rumors, Ask Jeeves unveiled a new automated paid listings service today — Ask Jeeves Sponsored Listings — that will allow anyone to purchase ads directly on the Ask Jeeves network rather than having to buy placement via Google or work through an Ask Jeeves account rep.

Search Engine Journal

Ask Jeeves plans to launch their own version of a paid search advertising platform as early as today according to Dow Jones and various search engine marketing analysts. The new paid search advertising platform will be a larger revenue generator for Ask Jeeves than their current agreement with Google and may lead to Ask ending their contract with Google AdWords before the 2007 end date
