BSkyB Now “Powered by Google”

by Gilad on December 8th, 2006

British Sky Broadcasting, a British satellite Internet provider had signed a deal this week with Google to provide search services as well as advertising and communication services for Sky Broadband customers.

Google will provide a Gmail interface for the sky.com that will also include access to Google Calendar and Google Talk. On top of that they will provide users with a YouTube backend to “allow users to edit, upload and share their own video content, including the facility to upload and download from a mobile phone”.

Google’s CEO Erik Schmidt commented on this partnetship:

“I’ve been waiting for this for a while,” he said at a meeting in London, adding that the significance was boosted as it marked the first time Google had sold the use of the back-end technology of YouTube and GMail.

He said that Google was planning similar deals with other large media firms and content providers. “If we can get this structure right over the next few months and it rolls out, then it becomes the index case for every other country and every other operator.”

It was also notd that if everything works well, Sky will “provide further services such as Google’s VoIP (voice over internet protocol) telephony services, enhanced storage and future product developments”.

My husband received an email from Sky to change settings on our email accounts because the are now powered by Google. He spent 4 hours doing this last night. Only to be told this morning by Sky that they have problems, we will not receive any emails and to try again tomorrow (it may or may not be fixed) - GREAT SERVICE BY SKY AND GOOGLE!!!!!!!!!
