You cant really have a chat program and expect widespread use if you need a login to a free email system that is by invite only, so after 16 months? (longer maybe??) GMail is now free and easy…well sort of, because you’ve got to be in the US and your account is confirmed by mobile phone. More details on the Google Blog.
