Google Base, Now it is Affiliate Spam

by Gilad on December 6th, 2005

About 3 weeks ago Google has introduces a new feature, they called it Google Base and labelled it ‘Beta’. Now, normally when a company comes up with a beta version, it means that they’ve done all that they could to solve all known issues on their side and now they need the public to ‘mass test’ it (for a lack of a better term).
Google, however, does not follow these rules. At least not this time. Google Base seem to be a very volunerable tool which lacks the basic feature of Google filtering it’s content.
Being that it is free, it attracts every single quick marketer out there. It started with porn listings all over the place, which then got fixed. Now it is affiliate links all across. As noted by Inside Google:

he showed me how the product listings on Google Base have become almost entirely filled with redirect URLs to Amazon. Looks like some members of Amazon’s affiliate program are taking over Base to earn themselves some cash.

I just keep thinking how insulting can a company be. Don’t take me wrong, the concept behing Google Base is great, but man, take the time to test it, not just half ass it and expect the public to do the rest.
