Google Changes “Hand-Job” Policy
Google keeps on customizing it’s policies to accomodate it’s needs. Last month (Jan. 06) they removed a policy page titled “Does Google censor search results?” in an attempt to cover for bending down in China. In that case they commented that “It is Google’s policy not to censor search results. However, in response to local laws, regulations, or policies, we may do so.”
Yesterday came another major change to a help page and what used to say:
Does Google ever manipulate its search results?
The order and contents of Google search results are completely automated. No one hand picks a particular result for a given search query, nor does Google ever insert jokes or send messages by changing the order of results. Occasionally, when a particular website is the subject of public attention, other sites begin linking to it. This may elevate . . .
Now became:
Does Google ever insert jokes or send messages by changing the order of its results?
No. Occasionally, when a particular website is the subject of public attention, other sites begin linking to it. This may elevate . . .
Some speculate that this was done to complete policy changes due to the China bend-down, others think that it is to be able to ban sites which they don’t seem to like…
