Google Slams Sicko, Gets Smacked and Apologizes

by Gilad on July 2nd, 2007

When some of your practices are questionable and most of the media is on your on your side you should really pick your fights and avoid pissing off people who are experts in outing ones flaws.

Well, one person in Google didn’t really see it this way and attacked Michael Moore’s new movie Sicko on the company’s health blog. The blogger, Lauren Turner, accused Moore in only showing one side of the story, that of the patients and not allowing a response from all the accused companies. Turner wrote:

“While legislators, litigators, and patient groups are growing excited, others among us are growing anxious. And why wouldn’t they? Moore attacks health insurers, health providers, and pharmaceutical companies by connecting them to isolated and emotional stories of the system at its worst. Moore’s film portrays the industry as money and marketing driven, and fails to show health care’s interest in patient well-being and care.”

Turner added a suggestion for the health industry to manipulate the publics point of view using ads on pages relevant to the movies:

“We can place text ads, video ads, and rich media ads in paid search results or in relevant websites within our ever-expanding content network. Whatever the problem, Google can act as a platform for educating the public and promoting your message.”

Well, the blogosphere really didn’t like Turner’s post and within 24 hours Turner was forced to post a clarification that this was only her opinion and in no way that of Google. However, I think that the damage has been done and the seed for a new Moore movie has been planted…
