Google to Distribute MTV Content to Over 200 Sites

by Gilad on August 6th, 2006

It’s been reported that Google had signed a deal with Viacom to distributes it MTV network’s content to over 200 websites catering to young-adults and teenagers.

According to the deal, content distribution will start later this month and will include embedded commercials and ads, this ad revenue is to be splitted 3 ways between Viacom, Google and the sites themselves.

According to the WJS (subscription required):

“Our technology takes MTV’s video, marries it to an ad, and shows it on a third site. No one’s ever done this before,” The Journal quoted Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt as saying. “If this works, it would be a very large business for all players.”

Viacom said a major advantage in using Google’s advertising network is that it can stipulate placement of its content, The Journal said. The partner destinations, which include Popsugar, a celebrity gossip forum and music site Rapgodfather, typically draw 100,000 to 150,000 unique visitors a month, The Journal said.

WSJ adds that in addition to this content Google will also offer classic MTV episodes such as Jackass and Beavis and Butthead for sale on it’s Google Video site.
