Manipulating Your Alexa Rating

by Gilad on November 10th, 2005

Alexa is a search engine / directory powered by Google results. As many of you know Alexa rates each site on the web by the number of hits to that site, hits which are counted only on machines which have the alexa toolbar installed.

Some people seem to overestimate these Alexa ranking and think the world of it. These people have posted some tips on how to inflate your Alexa rating in both ethical / non-ethical way:

  • Asking your Web visitors via newsletter to download the Alexa toolbar. This way when they visit you, they will help inflate your web ranking.
  • Have your employees download the toolbar on all their browsers and constantly visit the sites over and over again.
  • The site http://www.fakerank.com/ which says it will “boost your rank in 5 days guaranteed.”
  • JavaScript (message #5) that may help inflate your Alexa rankings.
