More Benefits to Top Ranking

by Gilad on August 23rd, 2007

Achieving top results is the goal of most SEOs and for obvious reasons. However, a recent survey sheds some more light on a by-product of a high-ranking - legitimacy & trust.

The survey taken by students at the College of Charleston suggests that Internet users mistakenly have an inherent trust of Google search results that appeared higher on a page. The students’ decisions were biased towards the top results regardless of their actual relevancy.

An associate professor at the college suggests that “Despite the popularity of search engines, most users are not aware of how they work and know little about the implications of their algorithms.” He also suggested that such trust among college students may increase the ‘rich-get-richer’ phenomenon as students mat re-visit, bookmark and even link from their personal college homepage, “The way college students conduct online searches promotes a ‘rich-get-richer’ phenomenon, where popular sites get more hits regardless of relevance,” he said. “This further cements the site’s high rank, and makes it more difficult for lesser known sites to gain an audience.

Bottom line, if you can rank well regardless of your crappy content you will be forgiven…
