SearchMash - Futuristic Google?

by Gilad on October 5th, 2006

Earlier this week a new search engine named SearchMash was discovered. A quick research into it’s backend brought up a Google owned IP address which have made the rumor pool and conspiracy theorists wrapped up in it.

At that point Google had decided to put an end to the speculations and claim ownership of the site maintaining that it is just an experimental site/interface, but is it really?

The search results can be reordered using AJAX, the actual URL listed will open an “advanced listing” options which include “similar sites”, “cached copy”, etc. There is an extensive use of AJAX (and JavaScript) in the interface and therefore if you have JS turned off, you can fogget-about-it.

All in all it is rather interesting. I’ve seen it being called Google 2.0 before, which is exactly what it is. But as all the hype is gone, and we’re back to good old reliable web, it’ll fade right along with it (in my opinion).
