The Fall of Google

by Gilad on October 7th, 2005

An interesting Threadwatch post is covering an article by Dave Winer titled Google diversifies, opportunity for upstarts. According to Winer’s editorial Google will follow the steps of AltaVista and fall as soon as a decent option will be found to replace it.
AltaVista fell because it was trying to do everything, and lost track of what’s really important:

If you think Google is a search play, keep your eye out for an upstart who thinks the various flavors of search belong under one roof, rather than diversified.

I don’t consider Google invincible in search, not as long as they leave such juicy tidbits around for their competitors, for such vain reasons. They’re too impressed with themselves. More impressed than we are.

The post has many comments by now, some who agree, some who disagree, but regardless it makes a very interesting read.
