Using Special Character ★ to Improve Clickthrough Rate
A site’s title line can make a huge difference when trying to capture search engine traffic. Keyword stuffed title lines may help with your ranking, but when it comes to getting people to click on your site out of a list of 10 has to do with catching user’s attention. This attention can be done with persuasive words, or by using special characters.
That is the topic that was discussed recently at the High Ranking forum, where the poster had posted this link which features a site with the character ★ at the beginning of the title. It definately catches attention. However, when searching for that site in Google, Google seems to ignore that character, and so does Yahoo.
It was then added that:
It’s got nothing to do with rankings, but the idea is to make your
listing stand out from the rest. I think it can do that well if done
tastefully.BUT…sometimes those characters aren’t rendered
correctly by all browsers and it can make weird characters appear in
your Title. That can probably hurt more than help.
And several others joining the thread witnessed that they can see question marks and squares instead which may be viewed as an error.
Considering the above, I am not sure if the benefits are worth the effort, but I may be an interesting thing to check.
